Travel to Teal Campground, Colorado, July 2020

Back on Colorado 149, after departing Thirty Mile Campground, I stopped for a snack and to stretch my legs at a pull out along the Rio Grande.  I remember this spot from other visits.  I think I probably stopped here many years ago on my first drive along this route.

There is a good view of a bend in the river and the cliffs along the river banks at this large pull out.

CO 149 intersects US 160 at South Fork.  I headed west on US 160 towards Pagosa Springs.  Along the way, I noted a viewpoint sign for Treasure Falls.  There is a large parking lot for this attraction and there were many vehicles in the parking lot.  It was a weekend day and maybe the crowd would be much smaller on a weekday.  I actually drove a little past the official parking lot, pulling out at a wide pull out a little further down the highway.  I walked back to the parking area to check out the area, taking a mask and just my camera with the 24-70mm lens.

There was no view of the falls from the parking area.  There were information signs for the falls and two trails to the falls, the typical tourist type trail, which most of the folks were taking, and a primitive trail.  Wanting to maintain a social distance from all those here, and because I wanted something more natural, I chose to take the primitive trail.  I do not suggest this trail for anyone not in fairly good physical shape.  It was, indeed primitive, steep with slippery muddy slopes, logs and rocks to scramble over; but there was not a crowd of people on it.  However, I was behind a family that had to stop frequently to catch their breath (giving me a good excuse to stop for the same), so I waited at a distance for them to proceed.  The primitive trail took longer than I had anticipated to get to the falls.

Arriving at the falls, it took more effort to keep a distance from others and I made sure to wear my mask all the time in that area.  There was a small viewing platform at the falls, which I avoided, electing to keep to the downstream area away from as many people as possible.

Since I did not bring a tripod on this hike, I hand held my camera, so I could not get a long exposure shot of the falls.  I also did not have filters and the sky was bright and over exposed.

It was possible to hike to the base of the falls, but I decided not to try that on this visit.

I took the easy trail back to the parking lot.  That trail was quite busy with folks coming up the trail, so I wore my mask and stepped away from those approaching.  The trip on this trail back to the parking area only took a few minutes.

North Clear Creek Falls, Colorado, July 2020

In route from the Ridgeway, Colorado area to the southeastern portion of Colorado, I stopped by North Clear Creek Falls.  This is a popular place with tourists, maybe because it is easily accessible and just off of Colorado 149 between Gunnison and Lake City.  There is a marker sign along CO 149 and a large parking lot with restrooms near the falls.

I photographed the falls from a number of view points, first from a distance perched on rocks away from the crowd, where I could get a downstream view of the falls.

Then I moved to the nearest view point along the fenced off area, keeping my distance from others and wearing a mask, since there were people coming and going in that area.  Most people were wearing masks, but a few were not.

It was mid day, but overcast, which was fortunate, since I did not have filters with me.  Still I had to use a small aperture to get a slow enough shutter speed to get the silky smooth water effect.

I think these two photos are the best ones that I got of the falls.  The heaviest flow is in the spring, due to snow melt; but the flow was good here even in July.

Yankee Boy Basin, Colorado, July 2020, Part 1

I photographed a number of times in Yankee Boy Basin, near Ouray, Colorado during my July, 2020 summer visit to Colorado.  The main reason for returning to this area several times, is a simple one.  It just happened to be the closest, most easily accessible place for scenic landscape photography from the state park where my son, his wife, and I were staying.

Navigating rocky, bouncy 4WD roads is required for access to many of the best places for landscape photography in this area and Yankee Boy Basin is one that my son felt most confident in being able to get to safely, early in the morning, then have time for other daytime exploration.  In the evening, it was possible to photograph here at sunset and get back down the 4WD road before total darkness set in and we would get back to our campsites in time to get a reasonably good night’s sleep before getting up again in the early morning hours for a sunrise shoot.

There is a mountain stream with a number of waterfalls along it here.  The middle two falls seem to be the most photogenic, so we spent much of our time in that area.

To get the image above, I stood right up against the closest part of the waterfall on the right side of the photo, backing into a bush, shooting downstream at 14mm to get the waterfall on my right into the shot.

There were wildflowers growing along the stream and I often included those in my images.  The image above is made looking upstream at this waterfall, while standing in the edge of the stream bed.  Even at 14mm from my position, I could only get a small portion of the waterfall in the photograph, while also including the wildflowers along the stream edge.

Standing a bit further back from the falls, on a rock ledge at the edge of the stream, I could get the entire waterfall in the image, while including the wildflowers and the rock outcrop on the right.

Since I’ve photographed in this area a number of times, I tried not to duplicate compositions from other shoots, which is not easily avoided.  It takes some work to avoid the most common compositions here.  I had some reservations about the composition in the above image, thinking it is too complex, but I have gotten some positive feedback on it, so I guess it worked better than I anticipated.

Readers will note the heavily overcast sky in most of these images.  I always like to have clouds to give the sky more interest, but heavy overcast can limit or eliminate the “golden” hour light at sunrise and/or sunset.

The image above is taken a few yards downstream from a waterfall, looking downstream at the mountainside in the distance.  During one similar photo shoot one afternoon, there was a family of three or four (man, wife and one or two young boys) in the area.  I kept trying to avoid them and had to wait several times as they walked into and out of my compositions.  If you are a purist landscape photographer, you know we try to avoid people in our shots most of the time.  Some tourists know this and try to minimize their interference with photographers, while others are totally unconcerned about walking directly in front of a photographer.  While composing an image similar to the one above, something hit the graduated neutral density filter mounted on the front of my lens, startling me, and I immediately heard the father, standing above me on the stream’s bank,  scolding one of the boys.  It turned out that the boy was throwing rocks in an indiscriminate manner and it was one of those rocks that struck my camera.  If not for the flexibility of the filter, it would have shattered rather than just get scratched.  If not for the filter, the lens would have most likely had significant damage.  Neither of the parents said a word to me about this event.  I had expected one would have at least inquired about damage and apologized for the kid’s action, which might have resulted in an injury and/or significant camera gear damage.  The scratches on the filter sometimes result in light streaks in my images.  Fortunately, I had the filter and much of my more expensive camera gear insured via scheduled property on my homeowner’s insurance policy, so I recuperated much of the replacement cost of the filter.

Yankee Boy Basin is popular with hikers and a good campsite for those that want to get the necessary early morning start on a hike up Mount Sneffels.  Still we saw only a few people during our early morning and late day visits here.

It is common to get afternoon thunderstorms in the upper elevations of the Rocky Mountains, but during the time we were here, there were more than the usual storms.  Some days were rainy for much of the day, which limited the time interval with our favorite light at sunrise and/or sunset.  We had to sometimes cut short our photography time to avoid the rain and get back down the mountainside before getting caught in a storm.

Of all the photos that I shot here, the one below is my favorite.

This image has so much of what landscape photographers look for in an image, late day sunlight highlighting the mountain tops, light beams in the clouds, silky smooth, flowing water and a sinuous stream leading the eye from the waterfall into the image.  More prominent wildflowers would have made this even better.

Indiana Covered Bridges – October 2019 – Dick Huffman Bridge

The third stop on day two of photographing Indiana covered bridges was the Dick Huffman Bridge.  I’m including a link to another bloggers site for his coverage of this bridge, rather than my usual links to an official government site.

As I was making my first shots of this bridge a number of vehicles crossed at intermittent intervals, stirring up dust, which I had to wait to clear.  One pickup truck stopped just passed the bridge.  The driver got out and walked towards the bridge.  As he passed, he said he was going to check the water flow.  I thought maybe he was doing some sort of official survey.  As I walked back through the bridge and was passing him, he explained that the following day was the youth duck hunting season opening and that he was taking his son duck hunting by putting a boat in at another location and floating down the creek.  He had hopped to not have to paddle the boat, but the flow looked very minimal, so he was going to have to paddle down the creek.

The bridge is not really leaning as much as it appears in the above photograph.  Shooting from this angle the wide angle distortion accentuates the tilt and I could not remove it without tilting the roadway in the process.

Back on the other side of the bridge, I walked through the wooded area bordering the creek and found a way to get down into the creek.  It was a little muddy along the creek edge, but I managed to avoid the worst of the mud.  However, I had a limited area in which I could move around in the muddy channel, unless I wanted to get really muddy.

The log makes a good leading line object, but I wish I could have gotten closer to the bridge.

Indiana Covered Bridges – October 2019 – Oakalla Covered Bridge

After a day of other activities, I took another afternoon to visit more covered bridges in an area east of Indianapolis, Indiana.  I started at Oakalla Bridge, just south of the last bridge (Dunbar) that I had visited during my first day of shooting covered bridges.

I think most of the covered bridges have some graffiti on or around them and Oakalla Bridge seems to be popular with those who like to mark things with graffiti.  I saw some evidence of graffiti being painted over on the exterior of the bridge and other graffiti in the interior.

It is also easy to get down into the creek channel from one side of the bridge.  The long log in the creek below the bridge even has graffiti on it.

There was plenty of room to move around on the wide sandy bank on one side of the bridge.  I made numerous images from this area, but in the end, I only chose a couple of those as most representative of the bridge and its setting to include in this post.

Indiana Covered Bridges – October 2019 – Dunbar Bridge

The last bridge that I got to late in the afternoon of my first day of photographing Indiana covered bridges was the Dunbar Bridge.  There was more traffic across this bridge than any of the other bridges that I had photographed earlier in the day, maybe because it was late in the day and people were going home after their work day was over.

Wide angle lens distortion, especially when shooting from one side at an angle to the plane of the bridge, makes these bridges appear to be leaning to one side.  Some bridges were actually leaning a little and/or the sides were not vertical, so the distortion exaggerates the lean or angle.  I try to correct this in post processing, but sometimes it is not possible to completely correct the distortion.

To get to the creek for a side image, I had to walk beneath the bridge from the only easily accessible route.  This appears to be a popular place for young people, judging by the graffiti and many footprints in the sand.  Looking closely at the writing on the left hand side beam one can see a message from Missy proclaiming that she loves Ken.  I promise that I did not write that or anything else on the bridge.

The side view of the bridge with the creek, bridge and tree reflections in the creek and the sandy shore line with the early fall foliage in the background was quite good.

The dim late day light required longer exposures, showing the motion in the clouds and probably blurring of the tree foliage moving in the wind.

Indiana Covered Bridges – October 2019 – Rolling Stone

My third stop during my first day of photographing Putnam County covered bridges was the Rolling Stone Bridge.

This bridge got its name from a large boulder in the creek that moved, when the current was strong.  That boulder was destroyed, as it was deemed a threat to the bridge.

Rolling Stone is a short, single span bridge in an attractive setting.

I shot multiple exposures of the inside, then combined those to  create HDR images.

The engineering and construction of these bridges is remarkable.  These were designed to last for many years, although these do require maintenance, mostly to the exterior, from time to time.

I was able to get down to the creek and shoot from several viewpoints along the creek shoreline.

Indiana Covered Bridges – October 2019 – Bakers Camp

The third bridge that I photographed in the afternoon of my first day of seeking covered bridges in Indiana was the Bakers Camp Bridge.

I made use of a fairly new looking fence in a grassy area on one side of the bridge as a leading line to the bridge.

At the end of the fence line, near the bridge, I found a way down to the edge of the creek from which I made several photographs with reflections of the bridge in the creek, after removing some distracting litter along the near shore line.  It is not always possible to physically remove distracting objects, but whenever it is, I like to do so, since that is far easier than having to remove the objects later in post processing.

Walking back up to the front of the bridge, I made the usual frontal close up to get the bridge name and date into a photograph.

I then walked onto the bridge to attempt shooting inside.  I stood on one side in case of traffic, which is not usually heavy across these country bridges, but not unusual either.  In fact, one friendly lady, driving an SUV, stopped momentarily to ask if I was getting good photographs.

Since it is dark inside these bridges, I used a high ISO and, due to the bright light at the end and from the top side vents, I made multiple exposures, combining them into an HDR image in post processing.

I walked on through and made other images from the opposite end.

2018 Colorado Fall Color Road Trip – Day 3 – Sunset – Supplement

After the previous post, I realized that I had forgotten to include a few iPhone photos of my final campsite along Owl Creek Pass Road.  So this is just a brief post to add those photos.  Thanks for your indulgence.

Yankee Boy Basin

Yankee Boy Basin, located in the Colorado Rocky Mountains near Ouray, Colorado, is accessible via a 4 wheel drive road.  My oldest son, who provided the 4×4 Jeep, and I spent several early morning and evenings in the basin, since it was a relatively easy place for us to get to and there were multiple photography opportunities in the area.

It is best to have a high clearance vehicle with skid plates and good off road tires before attempting to travel this road.  If the road is not wet, it might be possible for a high clearance vehicle equipped with only stock tires and an experienced driver to make it up the road.  On one of our outings there, a thunderstorm came up at our destination, so we went back down to a safer place to wait out the storm.   We encountered a young man in a Subaru Outback, who was planning to make the trip up the 4×4 road.  His vehicle had stock tires and no skid plates.  My son, who has some 4 wheel drive road experience and has been up this road a number of times, advised him not to try the road with his vehicle;  however, he told him that he could follow us, if he liked, and at least he would have someone nearby in case he had difficulty.   He tried to follow us up the road, but very soon got to a point where his tires could not get sufficient traction on the wet rocks and he turned around.

We ended up aborting one of our planned evening shoots due to a continuing storm.  We had hoped to get gorgeous views with clouds and mountainsides illuminated with the late evening light as often happens after a storm; but the storm and sky showed no signs of clearing, so we retreated to our campsites, where we were treated to sky, clouds and a double rainbow; but I only had time to shoot a few iPhone photos before these all faded away.

Yankee Boy Basin is a picturesque setting and can be covered with wildflowers in the early summer months.  There were some wildflowers remaining during our visit in late July, but they were mostly past their peak bloom.

The 4 wheel drive road follows a stream much of the way and there are a number of waterfalls and lovely cascades along the way.

At the end of the 4 wheel drive road is a small lake surrounded by mountain peaks.  A popular hiking trail begins at the end of the 4 wheel road that takes one to Mount Sneffels, 14,158 feet high mountain, which many hikers like to bag.

The elevation everywhere in this area is high enough that one not used to it might have some difficulty with the thin air.  As I’ve gotten older, I’ve noted that higher elevations are more of a problem, but so far I’ve not had altitude sickness.  I can move around quite well at altitude, as long as I am not carrying a load; but as soon as I pick up a loaded day pack and camera gear, the effort to walk up an incline becomes noticeable, requiring frequent stops to catch my breath.  I’m sure that my normal sea level life adds to the altitude effect.

One of the fun things about such outings as this is meeting other people with similar interest.  On our first morning in the basin, we chatted with the only other person there, who was also into photography and from the same metropolitan area as me.
