At the very end of a visit to Badlands National Park several years ago, I thought I had found a really good place for sunset photography. So during this visit I found that location again and walked around during the day, scouting possible locations to return to at sunset. I used my iPhone camera to test a few compositions and capture a few micro-environmental images.

In ‘Dry Planet’ I wanted to show the similarity between the dry, white clay in the drainage patterns to the white clouds in the sky.

The dry drainage is waiting for more rain from those heavy clouds in the sky.

‘Dry Stream Bed’ features the same drainage as in ‘Anticipation’, from another view point.

The dry mud cracks into segments resembling a picture puzzle.

More scouting photos to come later,
Ken

Looks too dry
Yes, but it does rain a fair amount in this area, it is just that the clay soil dehydrates quickly, under the effects of the sun and wind.
The first images have a perfect sky for B&W. Contrast is important in B&W. Just for fun add some contrast and see what you think!
Thanks, Denise. Keep in mind that these are iPhone camera images, which I’ve edited to bring out more detail already. Not wanting to be guilty of over processing, I try to exercise some restraint. Although, I’ve watched professionals edit images and they can get very agressive, so maybe I am over conservative.
I tend to be conservative too but B&W should have contrast! I tried boosting one and liked it! I didn’t realize they were iPhone images.
Thanks, Denise. My oldest son, more artistic than I, has told me the same about some of my B&W edits. So I will try to do better with the contrast in the future and hope to know when not to lean to hard into that slider.
